What is a plea?
- A plea is an agreement between the state and the defendant to resolve a case. A defendant will admit their guilt and in exchange for taking responsibility, the state will offer a punishment for the crime.
- All criminal cases are resolved by either a trial, a plea or a dismissal.
- When someone enters into a plea they are saying that they are guilty of what the state has accused them of doing and are willing to accept the negotiated punishment.
